What are the regional carnival traditions?
In Germany there are many regional carnival and carnival traditions that can vary from region to region.
The Cologne Carnival is one of the most famous and largest carnival celebrations in the world. The Rosenmontagszug is the highlight of the carnival. Here magnificent cars drive through the streets and people throw camels (sweets) into the audience. Cologne carnival is particularly known for its humorous carnival songs, satirical speeches and weird costumes.
Mainz has its own carnival tradition. The Mainz Carnival in particular is known for its “carnival societies” and humorous speeches. The Rose Monday parade is also a big highlight here. There are also numerous balls and carnival festivals. Traditionally, everything revolves around political satire and caricatures.
The Munich carnival and the carnival in many Bavarian cities are characterized by traditional moves, funny masks and a humorous cooperation. Why is Carnival in February?
Fasching mostly falls into February or early March because it is related to the Christian church calendar and Lent. Carnival, carnival or carnival are celebrations that take place before the 40-day Lent before Easter. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which is always 46 days before Easter Sunday.
