I’m an absolute fan of dips – these wonderful little sauces or pastes that give every snack, every starter or even main course that little something extra. What you can’t conjure up from! They often round off a dish or complement it harmoniously.
What always fascinates me is that almost every culture has its own traditional dips that are simply indispensable. A few of my favorite dips from around the world are
- middle East: Here you will find some of the oldest and most famous dips such as hummus (a paste made from chickpeas, tahini, olive oil and lemon) and baba ghanoush (an eggplant paste). These dips have traditions that go back thousands of years.
- Ancient Greece: Tzatziki, a yogurt-based dip with cucumber, garlic and dill, has its roots in ancient Greece and is still enjoyed today in many Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries.
- America: The indigenous peoples of the Americas had their own dips before Europeans arrived on the continent. Guacamole, a dip made from avocado, tomatoes, onions and chili, has its origins with the Aztecs in Mexico.
- Asia: Asia has a wide variety of dips and sauces, from soy-based dips in China and Japan to hot and spicy chutneys in the Indian subcontinent.
Tips and tricks for the perfect dip
- Fresh ingredients: Always start with the freshest ingredients. This ensures the best taste and really brings out the flavors.
- Balance taste: A good balance of acid, sweetness, salt and spiciness is important. If your dip is too tart, try adding some sweetness with honey or agave nectar. Is it too salty? A squeeze of lemon juice can work wonders.
- Right consistency: The texture of your dip should vary depending on its intended use. A thicker dip is suitable for tortilla chips, while thin dips go better with meat or vegetables. If the dip is too thick, you can thin it with a little water, broth or juice.
- Let him go: Many dips, especially those with spices, taste better if they sit for a while. The flavors have time to mingle and intensify. A few hours in the fridge can make a big difference.
- Use a blender: For creamy dips like hummus or guacamole, a blender or food processor can help achieve an even and smooth texture.
- Taste: This is perhaps the most important tip. Always taste your dip before serving and adjust seasoning as needed.
This delicious herb curd is quick and easy to prepare. It goes wonderfully with jacket potatoes and baked vegetables. It also goes perfectly with my beloved raw vegetable dips. Because I use low-fat quark, it is extremely low in fat. This recipe gets its special touch by using a little mustard.
This super delicious dip made from dates and cream cheese is perfect for any raw food platter or with a delicious grilled dish. Since it is super easy and quick to make fresh, I love it as a companion for my spontaneous snacks in between. I have adapted the classic slightly and made it lower in calories for you.
My feta cream with garlic and Greek yogurt is the perfect dip for fresh bread or crunchy crackers. With the feta cream with yogurt and honey you can bring Greece home in just 5 minutes. You can simply spread the cream on warm ciabatta, or fill pepperoni or olives with it and make your own antipasti. Yummy!
This pesto only consists of ingredients that you can collect yourself in the forest. In spring, garlic mustard grows on the edges of forests or meadows. Walnuts can be collected and stored in autumn. The pesto is suitable for pasta or as a spread.
Today I’m introducing you to a vegan spread made from cannelloni beans that is simply heavenly. It’s actually like hummus, but white beans are used instead of chickpeas. This results in a hearty and nutritious spread that is not just suitable for breakfast. It also goes well as a dip and is an interesting change from the original hummus.
You definitely have to try this healthy white bean dip. It is prepared quickly in just 3 steps and is very high in protein. I like to eat it with fresh vegetable sticks or as a side dish for grilling.
Try this fruity feta yogurt dip with strawberries. It can be prepared in just a few minutes and is very healthy. Perfect as a dip for crispy baked baguette slices or breadsticks for cozy summer evenings with friends.
This avocado dip is one of my favorite dips. Because I love avocados! This wonderful nutty-tasting fruit (yes, avocado is not a vegetable) is perfect for a creamy dip. I really like eating the avocado dip with tacos or vegetable chips (beetroot, parsnips, etc.), with baked vegetables or even as a spread. And the best thing is that you can prepare this dip in no time – a perfect option when you’re in a hurry.
