It’s tingling in your stomach – endorphins are at their annual high, your heart is dancing and a whole range of emotions from hope to anticipation to curiosity rush through you: Yay, you have a date with this one exciting person. Whatever happens, you want to put your best foot forward on your first date. How do you manage this? In short: you should feel completely comfortable – in your skin and in your clothes. Because, whether we want it or not, the visual initially has a certain influence: the less we know a person, the more we pay attention to appearance, clothing and body language.
What should I wear on a first date?
Oh, that’s exciting! Before the first meeting, we twist and turn in front of the mirror, take off our sneakers, put on our high heels and change from jeans to a maxi dress. And the nervousness is constantly increasing… so here are a few general tips:
► Authenticity is your strongest argument – stay true to yourself
The first basic rule is: Getting to know each other is about you, just as you are. So don’t make the mistake of thinking about what style the other person might like. There’s a reason you’re already dating. Therefore: Put together a look that you like and underlines your personality. Nothing is more attractive than your individual charisma.
► Rely on the tried and tested – it’s better not to experiment with fashion
Self-confidence is the most beautiful style. Whatever you wear on your date, you should feel 100 percent comfortable in your outfit. There are moments when the all-time favorites in our wardrobe give us that crucial bit of security. Nothing kills your positive vibes more than having to deal with slipping straps, tops that are too tight or – at second glance – a skirt that is a little too long. With a completely new outfit that you have just ordered online, such small discrepancies often only become apparent when you wear the item for the first time. This is a sure way to send non-verbal signals that can be received negatively: If you cross your arms because you are cold – despite looking cool – or hold your handbag in front of your stomach because you think your dress is too tight, your body language will change misleading. My recommendation: Wear something that you have worn many times and feel good about.
► The location makes the difference – match your look to the location
What have you planned for the first date? A date can encompass pretty much any activity – from a cappuccino in a trendy café to trips into the surrounding area or a walk in nature to a visit to a museum or an exclusive dinner. Sports enthusiasts get together to play tennis, jogging or beach volleyball. Sometimes one thing arises spontaneously from the other – for example, a stroll through town after lunch. So think about the coffee date in advance – nothing is more unpleasant than stumbling across the old town pavement in unsuitable shoes because you were only thinking about a sit-down meeting in the bar. And if, ideally, there is a spark between you, you won’t want to part so quickly…
Where should we go? – Tips for your first date style
► Coffee or breakfast meeting
Daylight, a relaxed café and a time of day that doesn’t invite you to dress up like a vamp – that sounds good and doesn’t let any pressure arise. Casual jeans and a fitted striped top are a good choice for your coffee date. In the cooler season, you can replace the navy top with a cozy sweater – sneakers or flat boots work well. If you feel particularly attractive in dresses, opt for a printed midi or maxi dress and style it with tights and a denim or leather jacket. Also an attractive idea: combine a slip dress and a sweater in the same color. Throw on a trench coat or wool coat and your look is perfect.
► Visit to a museum or exhibition
Are you both interested in art and culture and have you arranged to go to an art event together? The perfect dress code here is: individual, but reserved. You can wear your faux leather pants or culottes with a denim shirt or a black turtleneck and combine them with flat lace-ups or lace-up boots. A plain, simple tube dress is just as suitable, which you can give the appropriate twist with a leather jacket or a long blazer. Last but not least: Marlene trousers with a simple long-sleeved top and sneakers are a style that is as individual as it is suitable.
► After work drink
Meeting up for a casual drink after work requires less fashion effort. Since you both know that you will meet after everyday work, that is Office outfit totally fine. This can consist of an oversized jeans and blazer combination or a flattering, plain short A-line dress with ankle boots and a knee-length coat. If you want to add a little excitement to your look after the office, go for a contrast and swap the blazer for a chic leather jacket in biker style or switch to a feminine shoe with a kitten heel.
► Outdoor – walk or hike in the great outdoors
Walking next to each other, learning more about the other person and hearing little anecdotes from his or her life – a walk gives the opportunity to get to know each other while moving. For a walk in the park or around the lake Sneakers are the top choice. A relaxed maxi dress with a denim jacket or a long printed skirt with a simple T-shirt simply look good, especially against a green backdrop. You can also opt for wide trousers with a top or long sleeve and tie a denim shirt loosely around your hips. If you both take it more sporty and have decided to go on a mountain tour, hiking shoes are a must. Combined with slim leggings or robust outdoor trousers, you can’t go wrong.
► Eating out in a restaurant – dinner date
Statistically, probably one of the most common things to do on a first date is to eat together at a hip restaurant. For this occasion, you can style a faux leather mini with a sweater and booties or choose a fancier top with your favorite jeans. My advice: Rely on a skilful break in style – a wide top with a shorter skirt, a top with lace with jeans. So that the whole thing doesn’t look overdressed, you can also create a perfect balance with a basic shirt and a cool corduroy jacket. What always looks good in the evening: an overall outfit in black. This automatically unfolds a special magic and comes with a portion of coolness.
► Cinema – an evening for two
The romantic classic among dates – here you can do it when it comes to outfits take a decidedly casual approach. Black trousers, a T-shirt and a cardigan are just as suitable as jeans, sneakers and a hoodie. Depending on the season and your mood, swap your sneakers for booties, loafers, sandals or other flat shoes. The more comfortable you feel in your look, the better. Because in the cinema you intuitively notice a lot about the other person – after all, you are sitting close to each other. Pay particular attention to details such as fingernails and avoid perfume that is too intense.
► Sporting activity – pragmatic is the key
Do you both love tennis, like to cycle across the country on the weekends or play beach volleyball? The good news is: with so much combined sportsmanship, you definitely have something in common. Stylistically, the following applies here: the sport indicates what clothing is suitable for your first date. With a combination of a tank top and leggings plus a hoodie for cooler evenings, you’re basically right. You can give your look an individual touch with accessories such as headbands, hairbands or a fanny pack.
► Place-to-be: To sip cocktails in the bar
This night out location requires a little more attention to your styling. Here you can choose shoes with heels, high boots or pumps. An elegant jumpsuit fits here as well as a figure-hugging plain dress, a slit skirt with a silk blouse or a combination of Marlene trousers with a halter top and a short blazer. To match this, your make-up can also be a little more sophisticated. Nonetheless: Don’t go too deep into the color palettebut opt for a highlight such as red lips or particularly emphasized eyes.
! Tip: Choose nice lingerie for the first date – but not for the other person, but for yourself. Because when you feel attractive from head to toe, your charisma is stunning.
Four simple styling rules for your first date outfit
1) On a first date, being extravagant isn’t always the first choice – save your highlights for your second meeting and rely on your tried and tested classics.
2) A cleavage that is too deep draws attention to your breasts, but you are so much more – that’s why opt for a slight V-neck or a few buttons on the blouse.
3) The occasion determines your choice of shoes – in the daytime café and for walks I recommend sneakers or flat shoes. In the evening at the bar, heels elongate your silhouette and, if you can walk well in them, they give you an attractive appearance.
4) When styling makeup for the first date, a natural look is popular during the day. This works with foundation, concealer, a touch of blush for the cheeks, highlighter and mascara for a radiant look. In the evening you can go for smokey eyes, but make sure that your appearance doesn’t look too dramatic.
! Tip: Humor often has different meanings – it’s better to wait until the second meeting with a cool motto T-shirt with a statement character, which also often requires insider knowledge.
The first date is a (heart) touching affair. Even if we know that attraction has deeper causes than external appearance, we still want to be visually confident about ourselves. But the truth is: If the chemistry between you is right, the clothes are irrelevant. But just to have a good feeling that makes your eyes shine and makes you look lively and attractive, successful outfits are helpful. Outfits that you love make you likeable and confident. And the rest comes by itself…
